That may be correct as times change. It wasn't the case 45 years ago when the GOP inherited an awful lot new republicans from the democratic "solid south" following the almost entirely dem passage of civil rights legislation. Coincidence, nah. Makes me hum Abraham, Martin and John "But it seems the good they die young." I'd like to think it's different now but voting "habits" are passed to following generations thus the south remains solidly republican - even though racism may no longer be the reason.

hi clo,

let me say that i don't think there's anything intrinsically racist about republican beliefs.

so if there are many racist republicans, which some seem to think, they exist perhaps because a philosophy which has nothing much to say on the subject (republicanism being strictly meritocratic and therefore being neutral on the topic of race, pretty much) is more accommodating than one which is more active in its opposition.

for me, the injection of racism into the discussion is not really sensible. it angers the folks who sincerely believe in the social, economic and foreign philosophies the right espouses and who have no particular prejudices beyond whatever the normal level happens to be. and it does nothing to change those who are racist and happen also to vote republican.
