For some reason, some debate coaches seem to think you should have a lobotomy when appearing on stage. That you should attempt to avoid having a view or being yourself. Just learn some file of information and avoid presenting opinions with any passion or force.
But anyone who tries that looks clueless and passive. Obama tried that in the first debate. Romney in the third. In both cases, the candidate is left looking and sounding weak and dispassionate.
In my view, the only worthwhile stance is to be authentic. A high bar for Romney, I know. But his lack of authenticity was very obvious in this setting, as he disavowed the policy positions he has sold to his supporters - in favour of hewing as closely as possible to Obama's positions.
Bad loss for Romney.
