Profits at the software giant slumped to $4.47bn (£2.9bn) in the third quarter from $5.74bn in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenues also weakened, sliding 7.9pc to $16bn.
Consumers' increasing preference for tablets over traditional PCs is hitting Microsoft, which built its fortune by making Windows the dominant operating system for PCs.
