The US Constitution compromise on slavery was like the last debt compromise .... to kick the can down the road.
Not really a compromise at all. Language re slavery was in early drafts, it was removed and obsderved fully to be an issue they were unable to settle.
It was well known and considered that the Constitution was internally inconsistent, that it left that matter unaddressed, unsettled, and that the matter would return.
One can certainly side against Lincoln on imposing a Federal compulsory resolution to the issue, but it is a reach to say he abandoned a comprise, he simply stopped kicking the can down the road, and decided for one law and decided against balkanization. war was fought over that. The North won. Most consider the Union a more signifcant nation as a consequence of rejecting balkanization, and hence most put Lincoln in the top slot for presidents.
Obviously, such placement depends on rejecting balkanization and embracing uniform code for "inalienable rights ...."
