for some the distinction between message and messenger is all too difficult to make. It is unfortunate, but it is just the case.

There are ideas or messages I might criticize, and some might say that is crazy and say why, others might say instead that I am awful and un-american.

To some there is an obvious distinction between disputing my ideas, as opposed to saying I can't handle other views (which is making it about me, the messenger).

To me there is nothing subtle about the distinction, to some others the distinction is invisible.

Bummer.

no one has ever been booted from this board for having a view.

a person's view does not have to be the same as mine. csl is a great example of a poster who sometimes posts here, whose views i absolutely disagree with, but who is never discourteous. i think he gets it.

but refusing to permit moderation (eg where you decide to run a vendetta against another poster), trying to make the conversation be about the moderator - these kinds of things - have no place on this board.

some folks are dishonest about this. they claim they were banned for their contrary opinion, while knowing full well that in fact they had written a post (or series of posts) that was removed or that breached the on topic rule. okay. i get it. they want to tell the world they are the big man.

even so, i am fairly open-minded about what folks choose to post, so long as it isn't word garbage or intrinsically dishonest. on the other hand, it isn't my job to clean up for anyone. if a poster cannot observe a few simple rules, such as showing some respect for other posters, then i don't want them here.

if a poster cannot abide these simple requirements, they should not seek to post here. this is a party and you don't have an invitation. i'll let you join in, but if you are disruptive, you get the hook.

i guess i hadn't read the story of the prodigal son to the end. the bit where the prodigal tries to eat the whole fatted calf, contradicts the father's authority and gets booted back to the pig farm where he belongs. the moral of the story being about ingratitude.
