I am familiar with both of the narrative offered in your first to premises, and they may or may not be true, which was the subject f what I was addressing ... whether those premises are true.

Neither you nor I have any idea whether Senate ratification of the League of Nations would have prevented WWII, but certainly there are those that hold to that narrative with the certainly like pure water boils at 100 deg C at sea level and so on.

While it may well be the case that Hitler's ambitions or those susceptible to his rhetoric where paying close attention to the actions of the US Senate on the matter of the League or Nations, or whether upon the development of such an institution they would have suddenly decide not to resolve towards nationalistic militarism, or that should they do that that some sort of internatinal body (LoN) would somehow have more real impact than Chamberlain ....

but yes, I am fully familiar with the convergent doctrinal causal explanation for the 50-80m deaths, and that it can largely be explained by a few votes in the US Senate.

Dig,

The "good war" came out of the ashes of the "war to end all wars' and the failure of the isolationists in the senate to ratify the League of Nations treaty. As far as the average soldier went, so many of them had been gassed and had seen the true horrors of trench warfare that they were not the least bit interested in fighting another war. And remember, there were still the fading remnants of the very bloody American civil war mixed in with America's great war of expansion against Spain in 1898. America was in the grips of isloationism before the second world war and the only thing that shook this nation out of it was the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hitler and what went on in Europe took a complete back burner to the still lingering depression. When we were younger we had an encyclopedia still on our family's library shelves published in 1940 that showed Hitler in a fairly good light as simply the leader of another nation of the world.

What really made the United States an international great power and cast isolationism aside was what so many soldiers saw at the end of the second world war when Eisenhower made so many of them go through the concentration camps where thirteen million of those eighty million that you speak about were housed and where they had been slain. They were too late for so many who were living corps and who died quiet and evolkative deaths after the camps had been liberated. George S. Patton went through those camps and simply vomited. So, we, as a nation, have paid a high price for our internationalism. If you want to talk about being haunted, there are still citizens among us to this very day who are haunted by what they saw in those camps. Pacifists simply do not have an answer for this.

Alexander the Great lived at a time of conquor or be conquored, just like Ghengis Khan. If you did not resist them, they would simply encorporate you into their empires. They, like the Romans, were not only good at conquest, they were also good at administrating an empire. It haunts me to think of what the people around George W. Bush said when they stated that "America is an empire now!" America still has the balance between being a democracy and having the capacity to become an empire. Let's hope that we can keep it! It is crucial to all the world's future that we do! And, lest we forget, Mitt Romney has surrounded himself with those potential empire builders, and, that the only thing that the cultish Republican party wants to increase about government is the defense budget which is now higher than the next ten to fifteen nations combined!

IOVHO,

Regards,

Joe
