No Vegas honeymoon for Mitt Romney

LAS VEGAS — There were nearly as many Dean Heller T-shirts as Romney-Ryans on the Republican faithful waiting patiently outside Mitt Romney’s rally Friday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
But there was no Dean Heller.
Heller, a first-term Republican senator running in a too-close-to-call election, was inside as Romney spoke. He had his own schedule of events on Friday that precluded him from attending the Vegas rally, according to his campaign, which said he isn’t trying to dodge his party’s presidential nominee.

“Heller was holding him at arm’s length before the video. Now he’s running away like Usain Bolt,” said former Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston, the most influential political reporter in the state.
“His people are getting nervous. He’s a pretty decent candidate, and the only way they think they can lose is if Romney collapses. … If Obama opens up a 5 to 6 point lead as he has in other places, they think Heller will get dragged right down with him.”
