that's the sort of thing, although i don't think he's on an abnormal spectrum. he evidently loves his wife and family. so he's on the normal spectrum.

but his political philosophy pushes him to the extreme end of it when it comes to folks outside his purview.

it's really appealing to simplify a set of principles, so that you can say (rather neatly) that people who are dependent on support are somehow deficient. and then you hear the stories of the type i have been linking. and you realise the principles are nonsense. the reality is, there are huge numbers of folks who use the system the way it was intended to be used - as a fix to temporary or intractable problems.

once you realise this is the case, you understand that the safety net is actually a pretty good thing. of course, the risk is some will use it as a hammock. but then the trick is to have the safety net and winnow out the cheats as best as possible. which is the current system.

of course it isn't perfect. but the solution to an imperfect safety net is not to get rid of the safety net. it is to repair and improve it.
