Hi Clo, enjoy your stuff. Re: 47%-The aging of the "baby boomers" has contributed. Many by now qualify for SS at 62 and the majority of them opt for it. Also we're living longer. My "boomer" significant other will receive medicare shortly, so many others a smidgen older are now on it. Add to that the causation of an inherited gruesome economy increasing food stamp qualifiers and veterans from two unbudgeted wars requiring federal assistance. That's the President's fault? That's the premise of mitten's argument - 47%. No way that increase can be laid on the current administration. I'm a little perplexed that the Obama campaign hasn't jumped to confront the contender's inference.

you'll never guess....

But not all non-taxpayers fit into those categories. Even the ultra-wealthy can avoid paying taxes -- for example, if their income comes from tax-exempt bonds. Tax Policy Center data show that perhaps 24,000 of the top 1% of earners pay no federal income taxes.
