(from a fellow Dem)
I am one of the 47% which Romney despises. I paid no U.S. income tax for the past 5 years.
There is a simple reason. I don't live in the U.S.
From what I've been able to find, there are about 5 million U.S. citizens living and working abroad. That would be about 2% of the population.
For a married couple, taxable income needs to exceed about $190,000 before any U.S. income tax is due. Beyond that, it is complicated, but U.S. income tax does come into play. I remain below that threshold.
So, Mr. Romney, please tell me when my food and housing and health care are going to arrive from the U.S. government. For the past 5 years, I've received all of nothing. I'm getting hungry.
Of course, I have paid income taxes. I paid them to the Luxembourg government where I work and have been living, using the infrastructure, sending my child to school, and you know, benefiting from the society.
BTW: Mitt probably pays more income taxes to the Luxembourg government than I do. He has millions stashed over here.
Yes, I voted for Obama in 2008.
I will proudly vote for him again in 2012.
