WSJ/NBC Poll: Voters Split on ‘Better or Worse Off?’
By Danny Yadron
With Mitt Romney’s campaign hammering hard on whether voters think they are better off now than four years ago, the electorate is now largely split on the question, according to the most recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
Some 41% say the U.S. is worse off compared to the start of President Barack Obama’s first term, and 38% say things have improved. That “better off” number is up from 31% in August while the “worse off” number has been stable. The rest said the country is doing about the same.
But in a stark illustration of the challenges Mr. Romney faces, just 36% of voters said he was better prepared than Mr. Obama to lead the country over the next four years. Nearly half, or 47%, of voters said Mr. Obama was the better prepared. The full poll, taken Sept. 12-16, will be released at 6:30 p.m. on WSJ.com.
Among independents, Mr. Obama leads Mr. Romney 42% to 26% on the preparedness question. Undecided voters give him an edge over the Republican as well, though a plurality said neither is more prepared. And among likely voters, Mr. Obama leads 48% to 38% on the question.
