George Will Blasts Idea That Under A Romney Presidency Libyan Attacks Wouldn't Have Happened

by Andrew Kirell

On ABC's This Week, conservative columnist George Will dismissed any notion that if Mitt Romney were president this past week's violent protests would likely not have occurred.

Host Jake Tapper quoted Romney adviser Richard Williamson, who said that “there’s a pretty compelling story that if you had a President Romney, you’d be in a different situation.” He then asked Will if that’s truly the case.

“No,” Will replied. “The great superstition of American politics concerns presidential power and during a presidential year that reaches an apogee and it becomes national narcissism: Anything that happens anywhere in the world, we caused or we could cure with a tweak of presidential rhetoric.”

He then went on to attack White House Press Secretary Jay Carney for committing the same fallacy: “He said the riots in the Middle East were not about U.S. policy, they’re about a video. Actually, they’re about neither. If the video hadn’t been the pretext, another one would have been found.”

“There are sectarian tribal civil wars raging across the region that we neither understand nor can measurably mitigate,” Will concluded.
