nicely put, lc.

a wealthier islam is an islam with something to lose by violence. it isn't saudi or kuwait that is noticeably offended by this movie. it is pakistan. it is the north african littoral. it is saharan africa. it is the poor end of the arabian peninsula. it is the impoverished portion of the umma that listens to the muezzin and submits to his message. allahu akhbar. a call to arms. the peace of islam is under attack.

the movie is just the vehicle for local animus towards wealthier economies. i suspect the drones also contribute. but i think the movie explanation misses the underlying point.

Rather academic. With money in their pockets and choices of what to buy, the concept of "submission" is quickly forgotten. Without the opportunity to be adequately fed and somewhat material, not much choice left but protect the one thing you do have - voilent piousness.
