J. Christopher Stevens was a native of California who planned on returning there after his retirement from the dilomatic corps. He was born in 1960 and was a career state department diplomat. Since 2007 Christopher has been heavily and intimatly involved with Libya. He came to Libya when the thaw with Gadhafi occured in 2007 and was appointed as the liason with the rebels in Benghazi when the revolution broke out. After the fall of the old regime, Stevens was the only viable choice to be the ambassador and was appointed by president Obama in may of this year. Stevens spoke fluent arabic and was an expert on the complicated nature of the tribalism that composes Libya. Ambassador Stevens was very well known, respected, and loved in the tight knit diplomatic community across the world and the middle eastern region. He was not a pin stripe diplomat and spent much of his time away from the embassy in Tripoi, and, was very commited to helping the Libyan people toward a new era in their history. He had recently communicated that he saw a new light in the Libyan peoples eyes and that they were much more friendly to Americans, Brits and the French and that he hoped that it would last.
