How Much Do Chicago Public School Teachers Make?

CHICAGO (CBS) – A day after Chicago Public Schools’ teachers overwhelmingly authorized a strike, CBS 2 wanted to know how much the average teacher earns.

Salary figures provided by the Chicago Public Schools show teachers here have the highest average salary of any city in the nation. But, according to the Chicago Teachers Union’s calculations, Chicago teachers would rank second behind New York City.

A Chicago Public Schools spokesperson said average pay for teachers, without benefits, is $76,000.


Now consider that teachers work less than 8 hours per day. And that they have summer off. I think that we can figure that Chicago teachers are effectively averaging about $100k per year.

Chicago teachers strike for first time in 25 years; contingency sites ready, charters remain open

Chicago teachers began walking the picket line for the first time in 25 years Monday morning, leaving parents to scramble for alternatives for their children.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel quickly blasted the strike announcement Sunday as “a strike of choice.” He repeatedly declared Sunday night: “My team is available now.”
