The really remarkable thing about gold is that we (nearly all Americans) know that Federal counterfeiting occurs, is accelerating, and is going to continue. And *most* have at least some clue as to what this has done to the price of gold over the last ten years. A few (numbering in the millions) know that gold has risen every year for at least a decade. (It's even up THIS year, and this has so far been a comparatively slow year.)
But they don't buy gold and, year after year, keep coming up with the same poor reasons that they gave in 2000, and 2001, and 2002, and 2003, and 2004 ... and every year since right up to 2011.
Folks are remarkably stubborn. Foolish, too. It's OBVIOUS that gold will climb and that dollar-denominated assets will fall. But they won't lift a finger today to protect themselves against the problems that are certainly coming tomorrow.
That's fine by me, I guess, although I find it sad. So long as most people aren't worried enough to protect their wealth, there's still time for those of us who ARE worried to prepare. It also means that gold's future remains bright.
