Justice Dept. clears New Hampshire voter ID law

The Department of Justice has granted preclearance to New Hampshire's new voter ID law, the department announced Wednesday morning.

Per the DOJ letter, which TPM has here, officials stress that voters without appropriate ID can still cast a ballot if they sign an affidavit — unlike many of the other strict photo ID laws being put in place around the country.

Several counties in New Hampshire are among the states and counties for which preclearance is required under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

New Hampshire's law is much less strict than laws like Texas, which requires a photo ID issued by the state or the U.S. government, and which the DOJ denied preclearance last week. But after a handful of defeats for the proponents of these voting laws — Texas, plus the restoration of early voting days in Ohio and the decision in Florida to restore third-party voter registration drives — this is a small victory for stricter laws.
