Okay CF, no real disagreement. I was responding to your question: what does America (Americans) want to be? We're generally centrists. Dems are left of center. The current GOP is way way right of center. We need to be much more fiscally responsible. The economy will likely always has it's ups and downs. How about budgeting so we can pay down debt in the good years so we can borrow some when the bad years come? GWB really f'd us by giving tax cuts while engaging war on two fronts. What in the world is conservative about that? Wish he had his Dad's strengths (who wasn't all that bright either), particularly basic fairness and leadership. Anyway, I think for the most part we've been liberal enough and the majority is pretty much in the middle. We can deal w/ compromise on the edges, that's fair.
Take gun control as an example. I don't know what polling says but I'll bet the vast majority of us have no problem w/ gun ownership for hunting and self protection. However we think the assault rifle ban signed by Bush '41 should never have been allowed to sunset. Middle ground - compromise - common sense.
