It's only an 'over-reaction' if you ignore the fact that the fear of gun violence in our schools is raising exponentially yet our politicians pretend that there's nothing that can be done.
Can you imagine what the outcry would be if 83 Americans were dying each day (that's the current national average for all firearms related deaths in the US) as the result of some preventable disease? There would be hearings in Congress, telethons to raise money for R&D, people collecting pledges for 5k and 10k runs, colorful wrist bands to say nothing of ribbon decals on the bumpers of cars and trucks, etc.
