I couldn't say about metals in general. The precious metals are flying primarily due to an increased perception that the European Union bailouts are not working, and that QE3 is on the way.

I wouldn't expect gold to react to this story just yet. The Republicans need to put on a good show in Tampa, need to win the election, need to assemble a competent and honest team to investigate the benefits of a backed currency, need to sway Romney (who, as best I can tell, is beholden to the bankers), and probably need to convince Congress. Nothing will come of this soon, but everything has to start somewhere. Just look at the great strides Ron Paul is making today. Four years ago, he'd been written off.
