Hi Alea.......

That was the point i have been making...but having a
much greater impact than "some effects" "in particular
circumstances".The cultural belief of the Trobriand
Islanders practised for hundreds of years allows them
to engage in pre marital sex without the need for
conventional contraception....they use their belief system
instead.
Now that belief system or a persons belief system
can even lead to being able to push a sword through
their abdomen or upper chest without suffering death,
damage or blood......it can lead to a man suffering from
total disintegration of his hip bones from cancer being
able to regrow all his bone........it can lead to untold
healing without any medical costs what so ever...........

The placebo effect is the same with surgery as it is pills....
Make an incision, sow them up again & tell the patient they
have had a successful op & watch the self healing kick in
& medical costs/needs plummet.

Trouble is Newtonian Medics cannot explain it,Big
Pharma will lose trillions in revenue from it & the people will
empower themselves........not what Big Government wants!

& that's why the placebo effect is still an "effect" & not
used in science today.......you can't patent the placebo!
You can't make money from people's suffering if they
know they can cure themselves through belief......

That's to say, to create science, you have to perform the studies using the methods which provide assurance that the results are accurate.

I'm afraid I doubt the Trobriand Islanders conceive a different way to other mammals. Call me conservative. I'd want to see the academic research.

However, I am not denying that belief can have some effects in particular circumstances. Quite the contrary. New medicine is always tested for its effectiveness against the impact of belief, aka the placebo effect. It is only considered effective if the results show the new medicine is more effective than the sugar pills.

But as far as I know, the desire to avoid pregnancy is not especially effective. Ask a teenager.
