Zimmerman's Defense Will Pursue Traditional Self-Defense, Not 'Stand Your Ground'

The defense attorney for Trayvon Martin's accused killer said Monday that he believes the facts of the case call more for a traditional self-defense strategy, as opposed to a "stand your ground" statute.
George Zimmerman‘s defense attorney Mark O’Mara, indicated that invoking traditional self-defense in the second-degree murder case is more appropriate because the facts show that Zimmerman was unable to retreat from the initial beating he allegedly received from Martin.
“The facts don’t seem to support a ‘stand your ground’ defense,” O’Mara told reporters Monday.
The defense team will still pursue getting the murder charges dismissed during an upcoming pretrial hearing, but the top attorney expressed caution: “My concern with even calling it a ‘stand your ground’ hearing is we need to be more realistic,” he said. “I’ve said from day one we need to wait until all the evidence comes out.”
“I think the facts seem to support that though we have a stand-your-ground immunity hearing, what this really is, is a simple, self-defense immunity hearing,” the defense attorney continued.
The second-degree murder charge would be dismissed immediately should a judge side with Zimmerman in the pretrial hearing.
