Pipeline company opens claims center in Jackson
By Don Behm of the Journal Sentinel

Aug. 2, 2012 8:24 a.m.

The total number of wells contaminated with gasoline from a July 17 pipeline break in the Town of Jackson now stands at 17, West Shore Pipe Line Co. said Thursday in announcing it had set up a website with information on the spill and cleanup.

West Shore has established a claims center at the Comfort Inn & Suites on Tillie Lake Court, off state Highway 60 in the Village of Jackson. The center and a separate claims telephone hotline - 1-866-837-5016 - will operate between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day.

Go to the company's spill response website for information on testing of private wells in a state-designated drinking water advisory area around the pipeline break.

Residents of the area should use bottled water for drinking, cooking and food preparation, according to state environmental and health officials. The area extends from Jackson Drive on the west to Center Road on the east, from Sherman Road on the north to Spring Valley Road on the south.

Town residents in the advisory area are invited to use the claims center or hotline to request bottled water deliveries or to request information on the installation of well water filter systems.

West Shore is providing bottled water to residents in the advisory area and offering to test their private wells.

A portion of the advisory area is under more restrictive water use guidelines. Residents of a state-designated flush only area should not touch water from their well and should not use the water for laundry or watering lawns and gardens.

The area extends from subdivisions along Wildflower Lane north of Mill Road south to subdivisions along Mockingbird and Hummingbird Drives south of Western Ave.

West Shore is equipping each of 43 homes in the flush only area with well water filter systems capable of removing contaminants.

The July 17 break in the company's fuel pipeline occurred in the 1800 block of Western Ave. and spilled an estimated 54,600 gallons of gasoline. The line extends from the Chicago area north to Green Bay.
