Alea......

I lived in Sweden for 3 years, worked for 6 months which
enabled me to claim 18 months benefit at 90% of my
work salary..........one crazy system,but as a 20 year old
from the UK i couldn't help but take advantage of it!

You know the government also use to pay me to
Learn Swedish at school...I had to attend 4 hours
a day 5 days a week and got paid $8 per hour
and that's 25 years ago...........like I said one crazy
Unsustainable system.......it worked because there
was so much social shame associated with claiming
Unemployment at the time....

I doubt that the benefits are the same today.....too much
Immigration and that wealth collected from exporting
to Nazi Germany must have dried up by now........

one sorta right of centre argument i heard while on vacation was interesting. went like this.

countries like sweden have substantial welfare states. but the welfare state brings substantial obligations as well as rights. so there's no free lunch for the unemployed. the "unemployed" are properly protected and given a non-minimal income. but they work in exchange for their protection.

so sweden is both a leftish country from the viewpoint of progressive taxes and a rightish country from the viewpoint of the responsibilities of the unemployed.

like this idea. but need to investigate the detail.
