re: "It will probably kill it. Too bad. Nice tree."
You're probably right. But it doesn't really matter since I'm going to recommend the tree come down before it causes damage or kills someone in the other yard.
More and more, I think this tree (#2) must have been hit when tree #1 finished falling. #1 came down just a few feet away from #2, so my theory is plausible. And I doubt #2 could have stayed up in the dericho, cracked as it is and being supported by a relatively small tree. So it must have been damaged after the dericho.
These trees seem to be coming down like dominos. It's too bad that the homeowner didn't thin them out a few years back - but then, he doesn't really seem to care. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. He lives in New Orleans. It's a shame, though, since it's a nice house in a beautiful neighborhood. But it is in serious disrepair, and its exterior appearance is embarrassing. As a tenant, I don't too much care. However, as a homeowner, I would never let a house get into the kind of shape this one is in. IMO, it needs $100,000 worth of work. Maybe more.
To sell my house in Sacramento, I did the following:
o Built new redwood fences
o Built new patio
o Replaced all 1st floor windows
o Installed new kitchen counters
o Installed a new dishwasher
o Remodeled entire 1st floor bathroom - replacing everything - new cabinets, shower stall, lino, toilet, medicine cabinet, lamps...
o Painted the whole interior and garage
o Re-stuccoed the house
o Painted the whole exterior
o Re-roofed the house, including new plywood
That ran $30k - which sounds like a lot until you start adding up what I just described. In fact, it was extremely cheap. My point in bringing it up, though, is that when I say the current house needs $100k, it means that some serious work is needed.
On the brighter side, no pun intended, our pool is receiving more sunlight now, thanks to the tree damage. How much more remains to be seen. We just drained and cleaned it yesterday. It's re-filling today. The swimming pool has been useless until now. I think I've been in it once, for about 30 seconds. Surrounded by tall trees, the thing is cold on even the hottest days. And branches and leaves fall into it constantly.
There's not much I can do about the branches and leaves, but hopefully the water temperature will be better now.
