...when I was in Okinawa we got hit by a typhoon. A typhoon is the same thing as a hurricane, only it is in the pacific ocean. We had one marine who got sucked under a pier by a wave. ...but that's a different story.

re: "...but that storm is nothing compared to a cat 3 or better hurricane with f2-f4 tornadoes imbedded in it..."

That's for sure! I didn't mean to suggest that it came close to a hurricane.

There were only two aspects of this storm that you'd find out of the ordinary. There was very little warning. This thing was called a "dericho," a fast moving storm system whipped up by very hot weather. Friday was the hottest June day in Northern Virginia's recorded history. The storm seemed to come out of nowhere.

And it didn't last long. Half an hour to go from dead calm . . . to dead calm. It was an odd thing to see.

They're saying that some folks around here will be without power until the weekend. In this heat, that's not at all pleasant. While such outages are an annual thing up in New Hampshire and in other rural areas, this is happening to rich, urban folks. They aren't used to it!

I feel for those with stocked-up freezers. It would be pretty easy to lose a thousand dollars or more of meat.
