Here we go:
Can't be sure about Version 7, which is experimental, over Version 6. My impression is a lot depends on what Project we get. Sometimes the projects are identical and reliable and sometimes Stanford tries something new. Then there's trouble. A couple weeks ago my laptop got a project with high point value and four-six days to complete. I got to 70 percent after four days and it bombed. All for nothing! A reinstall (version 6) went back to normal.
One issue is how to get rid of an undesirable Project. I haven't taken a survey but it seems different cpu's tend to get different projects. That means Stanford knows something. Micro, have you tried "big" instead of "normal"? I forget, but didn't they say "big" was a requirement for version 6? Version 7 is an auto install. You don't have to decided that.
Is this really true? Stanford looks at our settings and machine capacity and this brackets the project possibilities. If we had a handle on that, we might be able to beat the bad repeating projects. Don't know.
Micro, you asked about my 680 cpu which is high powered. There I'm running Version 7 and when it's running it runs great but I have to watch it as the fan goes off intermittently. I was told to reinstall Precision X but haven't gotten around to it. Also once they sic'd me with an experimental project. I waited a day or so and after complaints I saw on the Forum, they re-instituted regular projects which is what is going now. They display expected PPD, but they are flaky. At first it said 22k, then 25k depending on the project. Don't forget it's running SMP and GPU so they combine estimates. It showed an amazing 45K PPD for a while but when I left it, it was showing 25K PPD. Haven't figured out what that all means yet.
