You know, I was actually wondering if we are the ones who think we know what we are talking about, but don't.

If even the army is not ready to demand use of OPAL-compliant drives, what hope in the rest of the government and in the commercial marketplace.

Perhaps the lack of demand really is eloquent of folks' conclusions about their needs.

To many, the price of hardware security seems to be too much loss of liberty.

Maybe insuring against losses continues to be the cheaper solution. You have to start drawing this kind of conclusion at some point.

1) Software is good enough. Apparently. Even if isn't.

2) Upper management can't "earn" humongous bonuses if they spend money on frivolous things like security.

3) The resident Libertarian IT geeks in charge say everything is okay. All they need to do is hand-tweak their current favorite security solution. They roll their own, man.

4) [Entrenched Security Vendor X] told them a patch is on the way. Everything will be okay. Drinks on them!
