I still think LTE could be a boost to turning things around. The current flavors of LTE that are in use are just souped-up 3G systems and they do not include a whole new category of advanced 4G technologies/features that I believe are based on some of IDCC's inventions. These will be introduced with LTE-Advanced. Starting with Rel 10 some of the features will be put to use and more so with each subsequent release (Rel 11, etc.).

IDCC has been saying for awhile that one of the key features for LTE-Advanced is going to be carrier aggregation. They have written whitepapers and done demos on features like this and others. Here is the link to that ArticleOne study that did some quality-based analysis of LTE patents and ranked IDCC up near the top for advanced carrier aggregation: http://bit.ly/NN8tSt

Besides Carrier Aggregation, other features of future LTE-Advanced networks include: CoMP (IDCC calls its version 'Fuzzy Cell'), MIMO, and relay nodes. I'm hoping IDCC's patent portfolio has a number of these LTE-Advanced features covered. Someone on the inside may know which companies own which specific essential patents for these goodies. All I can do is make an educated assumption, based on what I have read and heard from both the company and 3rd parties, that some of IDCC's solutions are embedded in the LTE-Advanced standard.

Assuming that's accurate, that should provide both a boost to the number of companies who come to the negotiation table willingly and to the rate at which they agree to license.

From my perspective, the timing of LTE-Advanced device shipments seems like it will line up neatly with the expiration of the Apple license. By that time, I hope the litigation disputes with NOK, ZTE, et al., have all been resolved. And that Apple (and/or it's ODMs) doesn't put up too big of a fight when it comes to renewal and renegotiation. Because in 2014, who knows how much of the mobile device market might be dominated by Apple products?

So, as to the question if LTE can help right the ship... or at least stabilize it to some degree... I don't think we will know the answer for awhile.

Just my thoughts.

No, no loaded questions from me. Thanks for your reply. I guess I am placing too much emphasis on Lte as being the technology that rights the ship. I cannot understand IDCC letting any Lte patents go or why Intel would need additional Lte patents since they were ranked high by OceanTomo. Cash flow is good, but where it is allocated could make a difference. An asset to asset deal is not that good. Hopefully, our outside auditors will concur that this is revenue. More tea leaves.
