I guess that's my point, going to a gold standard would at once
1. cause massive (disruptive) appreciation in the value/price of gold
2. be as or more vulnerable to instability. One word: Hording.
The current monetary system of agreement and one of deliberately arbitrary management (simply assigning inflation, liquidity, and growth targets) seems no more crazy or unstable than would be the case with a gold standard.
So while we can criticize and lament the current system, what is the alternative ... gold?
Humans have routinely conjured agreed upon monetary systems since their dawn. These are and have always been vulnerable to corruption, manipulation, counterfeiting, and reckless mismanagement.
.... but I'm not seeing an alternative addressing your concerns about the current system.
