Nokia Unhappy With Favorable Decision for Apple’s iPhone

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) insistence on a smaller SIM card has finally been accepted despite opposition from other phone makers. The international standards body, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, approved the nano-SIM, which is 40 percent smaller than the prior model at its 12.3 millimeters by 8.8 mm by 0.67 mm.

Phone makers had debated the change for months, disagreeing over design and size alterations. Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) had both disagreed with Apple’s suggestions, with the Finnish phone company reportedly even accusing the iPhone maker of misusing the standardization process. Nokia remained unhappy with Friday’s decision. “Nokia continues to believe that the selected nano-SIM proposal is technically inferior and not suitable for a number of applications,” the company said in a statement to The Verge.

With the smaller size, device manufacturers will theoretically have additional room for a larger battery or additional components. The new card will be backwards compatible with existing SIM card designs, and offer the same functionality as all current cards, ETSI said.
