Hi dig,

And if you recognise the value of the things you barter, why not operate an IOU system which permits the exchange of goods and services between people?

And that's the system we have, isn't it? Enforced by the state, of course, because private currencies will often prove unreliable. Whereas to screw your currency, it helps to be a nutter like Mugabe.

I do not dispute that, but should money fail then I would be stuck with bartering.

Your argument is as such:

Printed currency is crazy money without value. My money, gold, has value.

My argument is:

Gold is just like other money, it has little intrinsic value, certainly more than paper, but from an engineering standpoint, less than steel.

That you agree in the value of a monetary system is simply you arguing over an agreement that an ounce of gold buys a bushel of corn as opposed to an stack of bills or a bucket of seashells.

My point is your argument is simply a preference for a certain tender, but entirely dependent on the same monetary agreements of today.
