having now looked them up, the sun is 416 times the diameter of the moon and the sun is around 390 times as far from earth as the moon is - in their elliptical orbit (so the distances vary).

So you are right. They are around the 400 mark in both cases. Within 6 or 7%, say on average.

Hence they look roughly the same size in the sky. The elliptical orbits mean that sometimes the eclipse will be fuller and sometimes the sun will stick out the sides of the moon.
