The fact that there was a Draft kept the public at large involved... On top of it, the Draftees had a bad habit of fragging their leaders, likely the bad ones that were over the top. That threatened the military complex, so now, we'll not ever see another Draft so they can maintain their corporate hold on the troops... One more way to control dissent from the masses... Top it off with religion, evangelistic whackos, here we are...

I think you miss the major problem, 'money' in elections.
Sadly, individual(s) voters have very little to do with the outcome.
'Money' in elections, especially corporate money has ruined our Republic.

Unless this is changed, (which politicians are willing to do this when they depend on the money) We the people are totally screwed....

By the way, think back, during the Vietnam war how many men were drafted & GAVE THEIR LIVES...
You can't GIVE MORE THAN THAT!!!
Keep that in mind with your 'free society theory'.
