I think someone once said that genes don't cause evolutionary changes. They register them.

I don't quite accept your reduction of life to the movement of alleles. Things are going on above that layer in a way that makes a world story that is all about alleles incomplete.

Environments influence change amongst individuals. Environments are not allelic. If we care about variations within the allele population, then we need to think about the way populations are affected.

A tree isn't all about its trunk. Branches, leaves and twigs matter. As does the amount of rainfall, sunshine etc.

This nets out as a Gaia notion for those that seek to assign consciousness.

Should one go all Hari Seldon on it, one could imagine other Gaia's, they fundamentally distinct, and a time and a place where they meet.

We are one collection of mutually dependent alleles, all highly of one, of LUCA, our assignments of species and individual really just fancy think.

Until we meet another Gaia, we are one, when we meet, there will be two, the alleles of Luca, and the alleles of another.
