Homoousion - Jesus is the same substance as God.
Homoiousion - Jesus is of like substance with God.
Arius believed the latter. Athanasius and everyone else believed the former. Athanasius won and it made for a much stricter church during the Middle Ages.
In my view you can draw a straight line from this decision to the breach with science. In the end, a strict religion came into conflict with observation. Joshua said "Sun, stand thou still" and the church said this meant the earth was still and the sun went round it. Galileo said, lookie in this telescope and you will see stuff orbiting things other than the earth, so why not consider that the earth circles the sun.
