KTC,

And I'll bet that back in 1921 when someone proposed a law recognizing that Native Americans were actually U.S. citizens that that too caused a bit of a stir even though it also was the 'common sense' thing to do. Up until then, the only way a Native American could gain their citizenship was to marry a citizen, or if you were a male, you had the option of enlisting in the military where you would gain your citizenship upon finishing your enlistment, if you hard served honorably. After WWI, when it became known how many of the American dead in Europe were Native Americans who were not yet citizens, it caused such a scandal that congress was forced to finally do something which they had been conveniently ignoring for well over a hundred years.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is telling Hispanics he is ready to sign a bill that would allow illegal immigrant students a path to citizenship, a measure he calls a "common-sense" reform.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued a comprehensive ruling giving transgender individuals sorely-needed federal protections against discrimination in the workplace. According to the ruling, employers who discriminate against employees or job applicants on the basis of gender identity can now be found in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, specifically its prohibition of sex discrimination in employment.
