President Obama's April job approval has surged to the highest level since last May, when U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden
According to the polling firm Gallup, Obama's daily approval average registered at 47 percent — the highest since May 2011. According to Gallup, Obama has gained the most among independents since his approval reached a low point in August 2011. Since August, Obama's approval has increased 8 points among independents, 7 points among Democrats and 3 points among Republicans.
In August, Obama was 18 points underwater among independent voters — now he is essentially even, with 43 percent approval and 45 percent disapproval. Gallup also found that independent women approve of the president 46 percent to 42 percent disapproval.
Still, despite steady gains in his approval, Obama remains essentially tied with Romney in Gallup's head to head match-ups. Their Monday survey showed Romney slightly ahead, 47 percent to 46 percent over Obama in a national tracking poll.
Overall, Obama is on track for incumbent presidents who have been reelected to a second term — with his approval rating trending upward instead of down.
