Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

ribit,

re: "...if ya can't works ya way thru college ya isn't college material."

No one can work their way through certain colleges. There are schools where no normal person can hold down a job while also studying the material. They'll fail if they try. There are other schools where the tuition is SO high that no student job is sufficient.

The answers are for students to get scholarships, get help from their parents, or go to different schools. That's pretty simple.

I attended American River junior college for a year and a half to meet the lower division requirements for my major, then transferred to a less-than-prestigious university (CSU Sacratomato) where I obtained my Bachelor's.

I worked 20 to 30 hours per week the entire time, paid the bills myself, and never took out a loan (except from my parents who lent me money to buy a car).

So, it can be done. It just isn't fun. But why should it be fun?
