Hm. While pdowd's assertion is controversial, he's right that there's a strong correlation between high black percentages and low "Peacefulness" rankings in the States. The opposite is true as well. Low black percentages correlate positively with "Peaceful" states.
Don't read too much into this, though. The one may not cause the other. It could be that effects from the Civil War are still being felt, or that wealth (which is lower among blacks) is more common in the "peaceful" states.
Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Hawaii are vacation hot spots. That definitely could play a role There could be any number of other explanations.
But, credit where due, it could also be that pdowd is right. The stats support his claim.
