New regulations proposed last week by the Environmental Protection Agency would require coal-fired power plants to capture and mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, but the regulations shouldn't derail the proposed Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center near Sweetwater, a company official said Thursday.
"The proposal by EPA would require carbon dioxide emission controls on new coal plants, similar to the designs of the Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center," Greg Kunkel, Tenaska vice president of environmental affairs, wrote in an email. "In essence, these are the types of policies that Trailblazer was conceived to address ... We are still evaluating the details of the draft rule and its impact on our project."
In 2008, Tenaska announced plans for a coal-fired power plant in Nolan County near Sweetwater that would be among the first to capture the majority of carbon dioxide emissions. Scientists say such emissions contribute to climate change.
