GM reports 12% increase in March sales

April 3, 2012, 10:26 a.m. EDT

BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) said Tuesday that U.S. sales of its vehicles jumped 12% in March over the previous year's period to 231,052. Sales of passenger cars shot up 22%, with compact-crossover sales soaring 47% and mid-size sales increasing 38%. Full-size pickup truck sales rose 14%. Sales of the company's recently-launched Volt increased 50% over the December 2011 period to 2,289. Shares of GM were down 2% at $26.18 in mid-morning trading.

Ford U.S. sales climb 5% in March

April 3, 2012, 9:48 a.m. EDT

BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) said Tuesday that U.S. sales of its vehicles rose 5% in March over the previous year's period to 223,418. Car sales were up 8%, with sales of its popular Ford Focus leaping 78% to 28,293. Utility vehicle sales increased 6%, while trucks sales jumped 11%. Shares of Ford were up 1.7% at $12.84 in early trading.
