LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Chrysler LLC, controlled by Italy's Fiat (MCI:IT:F) , on Tuesday reported a 34% increase in March U.S. sales to 163,381 cars and trucks to notch the auto maker's best monthly sales tally in four years. The Fiat brand boosted results thanks to a strong performance from its Fiat 500 subcompact, which launched in March 2011. Chrysler has now recorded 24 straight months of year-over-year gains, including 10 months in a row of at least 20% improvements. "The combination of credit availability, an improving economy, pent-up demand and even high fuel prices encouraging people to acquire newer more fuel-efficient vehicles are all helping to drive industry sales," said Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales.
