We develop incrementally, which often manifests itself abruptly, giving the appearance of discontinuity. Paradigm shifts are in this just a straw, the appearance of which impresses aa a punctate product of deliberate invention.

Hi csl,

Well that is the quest.

I maintain that we mostly develop incrementally. And thus modern society contains within it the shadows and spirits of former ages. I see this process as organic rather than contrived. But even though I disagree with doma over the process, I appreciate and share his sense of continuity. I just see the organising intelligence as being constructed out of the laws of nature
