Following the dismissal of Bo Xilai as party chief of Chongqing, rumors of an attempted coup in Beijing have spread throughout the country over the internet, reports the Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily.

Unconfirmed reports provided by Chinese internet users have spoken of a power struggle between Premier Wen Jiabao and Zhou Yongkang, head of the party's Central Political and Legislative Committee. Since Zhou, like Wen a member of the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, is considered a protege of former president Jiang Zemin, netizens claimed that Jiang and his successor, Hu Jintao, have been attacking each other's supporters within the government.
