Weby, It's similar to the development of wings in insects. How do you go from no wings, to flight with fully adapted wings? Is there such a thing as a somewhat developed wing? How do you deal with the problems of intermediacy?
The probable answer? Wings were a contingent development resting on the back of an initial thermo-regulatory phase of insect adaptation. Only when the dorsal heating/cooling flaps were in place was flight conceivable. There was no direct route from flightlessness to flight.
Wave cannot go from zero to a fully-fledged trustworthy computing architecture without finding the right steps to get there. There is a real issue with getting from A to B. I suspect the basic services are intended to address this difficulty. And this may be why the full EMBASSY structure, which was analagous to flight, was not accepted at its inception.

awk, Actually I really did mean the risks of a trust infrastructure of "this" kind. Sure the designers seem to be going to some lengths to address most concerns. But there remain issues about a government back door (BTK's point), about the terms of ownership within a secure structure (one of Barr's points), about non-TCG people's ability to tinker and improve things.
Taking BTK's point, you are looking at some very difficult issues when you balance a government's demands to protect its citizens (terrorism, crime) and pursue its interests (tax, say) with a citizen's interests in privacy and their own protection. If you allow the government interest, you create a backdoor. If you create a backdoor you build a less secure infrastructure and all manner of potential abbreviations on privacy. But maybe you stop planes flying into buildings.
Most technology has a wonderful application. But it is not uncommon for there to be potential drawbacks. And it is helpful to have these considered.
