A recent Freedom of Information Act request has unearthed a list of words PDF that would cause the government to begin more closely monitoring your online activity. There are more than 500 words you shouldn’t say on Twitter or Facebook unless you want to be flagged by the Department of Homeland Security.

The “Media Monitoring” program is run by the Department of Homeland Security beginning in February 2011, by monitoring “online forums, blogs, public websites, and messages boards” and disseminating information to “federal, state, local, and foreign government and private sector partners.” Specific sites mentioned were the comments sections of “The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post, the Drudge Report, Wired, and ABC News.” the DHS has also said that it will routinely monitor the public postings of users on Twitter and Facebook.

They do this by creating fake identities social media profiles to spy on other users, storing information gathered about users for up to five years.
