I don't often say this, but I actually feel sorry for government workers. A little bit. For SOME of them. Those who are capable in their work really ought to think about getting out of government and doing something productive for a change. There's little redeeming value in suckling one's life away on the taxpayers' teat. Government workers have, to an increasing extent, become political fodder. As this article and numerous others makes clear, GOVERNMENT certainly has no respect for its workers.
Those Senators who voted for this bill and its garbage amendments are dishonest, disingenuous and disgusting beyond words. The only reason they get away with this sort of B.S. is because no one usually finds out.
Well, this time, you folks are finding out.

Measure would use phased retirement savings to fund rural schools
By FederalDaily Staff

The Senate on March 8 passed an amendment to a surface transportation bill (S. 1813) that would make changes to the federal retirement system and use savings generated by the measure to provide funding for rural schools. The amendment, introduced by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), passed the Senate 82-16.
After the vote, Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Senate federal workforce subcommittee, issued a statement explaining his opposition to the legislation (S. AMDT. 1825), which he voted against.
“I am voting against the Baucus amendment on rural school funding because it is paid for primarily by changes to the federal retirement program.” Akaka stated. “As a former educator, I highly value school funding, but I must stand up against Congress’s new habit of treating federal employees like a piggy bank.

“While the change to federal retirement, a phased part-time retirement-employment concept, may be acceptable to the federal-postal community after proper analysis and study,” Moten wrote, “it is completely outrageous to federal and postal employees to be required, again, to serve as the Automated Teller Machine for programs having nothing to do with deficit reduction.”
