Hi doma,
That is not democracy's intention. But it is its vulnerability.
Money influences every system of government. A constitution is meant to provide a shield against the concentration of interests. A democracy is intended to give a voice to the people - by definition.
Unfortunately, its constitution has become the sacred text of the United States. This means it is very difficult to make any changes to it. Incumbent interests are stuck on its provisions like barnacles on a boat.
So it gradually and ineluctably fails. Incumbent senators are not easily unseated - if only they pander to whichever audience they are talking to. Even in a crisis, congress cannot act. Taxes on the wealthy cannot be raised, regardless of the deficit. The military complex is out of balance but its scope may not be reduced. Money dominates elections.
But because the organising document is sacred, no one even dares to point the finger whence it should point. And yet, every major failed spoke has the constitution as its hub.
Only allow change to occur at a greater pace and so many problems disappear.
