It's not that social safety nets are bad ... they're not ... it's who administers them that is key. Social safety nets need to be provided by family, churches and other local community organizations, and charities because they are more intimately familiar with the people they are trying to help and will be proactive in encouraging the needy to take personal responsibility and do what they can to help themselves. The impersonal, bureaucratic government and the huge hand-out programs it creates and/or supports know very little to nothing about the real lives of the people they are "charged" to "assist." The government does not help the needy get back up on their own two feet ... it simply throws other people's money at them, thereby addicting them to the dole in the process, and then otherwise ignores them - at least until it is time for the ballot box to be stuffed in support for the politicians who promote (and personally engorge themselves, thereupon) these socialist programs. In most things that it attempts ... because 95% of what it attempts to do is actually outside (often times, WAY outside!) its purview ... the government is too pathetically inept, too slow, too stupid, and too removed to come anywhere close to actually accomplishing its supposed goals. In fact, in most things, government intervention actually ends up making things worse. After spending trillions of dollars on it that we don't have, how's LBJ's "War on Poverty" going, eh? According to its leftist advocates, poverty is worse than it has ever been and we "need" to spend trillions more!  Einstein was 110% correct - "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Government-run social programs have always been and will always be wasteful, ineffective, counter-productive f*ck ups ... it is way past time to acknowledge this unmitigated disaster and turn the social safety nets back over to the local communities where they belong.

D&O, you are sounding like a fiscal conservative (hey who isn't) but the world has not been kind to fiscal conservatives, but darn it, Clinton did a tax hike, welfare reform, and pay-as-you-go. W lit fire to the joint.
Some despise govt so much, that I believe their purpose is to break it beyond repair, then throw their hands up and say ... looks like we need to get rid of it, its broken.
Social safety nets are cheaper than jails and civil war. Giving punk bums a free lunch is wrong, but it beats the alternative ... within reason. All groups of humans have their doers and their deadbeats. No amount of COMMIE mongering is going to change that. So, you jail them for 60-80k a year, give them a free lunch for 20-30 a year, or try to starve them until the go ape steal your stuff and burn the house down.
Extreme generalizations, the point being sometimes sensible is more sensible than right and wrong.
